Steps

1
Done

Let’s get started with the recipe!

First of all, grind the garlic cloves, finger-long slices of ginger and the onions with some amount of water using a blender. Once you’ve finished grinding, wash 8-10 pieces of crabs and clean them completely.

2
Done

Next, heat the frying pan on a medium flame and pour some oil. Once the oil is hot, add a few sesame seeds, mustard seeds, and 1-2 clove flower. Also, add 2 dried chilies. Cook the spices for a while until aromatic. Next, add in some curry leaves and stir it from time to time.

3
Done

Once it has cooked well, add the ground paste with a little amount of water to the spices and stir it well. To this, add in a few pieces of onion. Stir the mixture well and allow it to cook for a while.

4
Done

Once cooked, put the crabs into it and stir it evenly so that the crabs are fully coated with the spices. Bring the crabs to a boil. Next, add in some turmeric powder, followed by some red chili powder according to your taste and spiciness.

5
Done

After this, add in a little bit of fish curry powder (basically used for seafood) and 1 teaspoon of garam masala for taste and flavor. Mix the ingredients together and cook it for a while on a lower heat to prevent it from drying.

6
Done

Next, add in salt to taste, cover it with a lid and allow it to cook for about 10 minutes. Remove the lid and stir it from time to time to avoid sticking.

7
Done

Cover it with a lid again and cook it for another 10 minutes. Please note that you don’t overcook the curry and allow the gravy to dry. The preparation usually takes 10 minutes, however, the cooking process takes 20-25 minutes.

8
Done

Now that the curry is almost cooked, add some coconut milk to it to add taste and slightly reduce the spiciness. Stir and mix it well. Cover it with a lid again and let it cook for a couple of minutes.

9
Done

Once the oil is separated, remove the lid, and add a pinch of salt to taste. Transfer the curry to a bowl and garnish it with a few coriander leaves.

The tasty Malaysian Coconut Crab Curry/Masala is ready to be served!
